Community raises money for Henrico High School championship rings

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

Fans of the Henrico basketball team are raising money for the players to get their title rings.

It's been weeks since they won the first state championship in school history but the school didn't have money to pay for the rings. The community is rallying behind the team to help make that possible.

This is the first time any team at Henrico High has won a state title in its 51-year history, so it doesn't necessarily budget for something this unique. It will cost at least $4,000 so that every athlete on the team can have a ring.

Winning is everything to Senior Tim Jones. His team is the first to land a state title for the Warriors.

"It means a lot," said Jones. "Hard work really pays off. We put a lot of time in on the court. It really paid off and we got what we wanted at the end."

He's still waiting for the tangible prize. Right now, it's coach Vance Harmon's top priority to make sure every player has one. Weeks ago, winning was the only thing on his mind.

"That was the last of any concerns we've ever had," Said coach Harmon. "Ring money was never in the process. Obviously it's a good problem to have because there are so many things when you're trying to prepare for the game and the season itself."

School board Representative Lamont Bagby is taking on the effort to raise money. He says a blend of businesses, alumni and people from the community are pitching in to help.

"It's been overwhelming," said Bagby. "Everyone I've spoken to says they will contribute something – some gave $10, sometimes a couple hundred, sometimes a couple thousand - so it's been significant."

It will also leave a lasting impression on Jones who hopes to continue his basketball career in college.

"I'd like to say thank you to everyone who's helping us," Jones noted.

The rings are on order and should be in by May. Bagby is still raising funds. If you'd like to help, mail checks to:
