RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

The Metropolitan Community Church in Richmond held a mass Monday night to pray for a Supreme Court decision siding with same-sex couples.

The MCC, which was founded on gay and lesbian rights, held a mass for members of its congregation and others who want to see the Supreme Court overturn Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

"The cases the Supreme Court is hearing Tuesday and Wednesday are very important for justice in our country," said MCC Pastor Robin Gorsline. "Part of justice is praying for it."

However, others outside of the Metropolitan Community Church that are praying for a different outcome.

"Over 60 percent of people have voted to affirm traditional marriage in America. We think the court ought to respect that," said Chris Freund, Vice President of the Family Foundation. He also believes the Supreme Court should respect what's best for children, which he believes is give them a mom and dad."Instead of focusing on what adults would like to have, we ought to focus on what's best for children."

There are indications more Americans now support gay marriage. On Monday, Senator Mark Warner announced his support for same-sex marriage, saying his views reflect how many Virginians and Americans now feel.

While the Supreme Court will rule this week, its opinions aren't expected to be revealed until June.
