MORE BANG FOR YOUR BUCK: New hybrid and gas vehicles more affordable

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Besides your home, your car is probably the biggest investment you'll make.

NBC12's Diva of Discounts went to the 2013 Virginia Motor Trend International Auto Show to see if the prices on these new hybrid and gas vehicles have made them more affordable than they used to be.

The cars at this year's auto show are more fuel-efficient than ever. The 2013 Ford C-Max hybrid starts at $28,365 - unaffordable to some, until you do the math.

This car gets 47 miles a gallon for city and highway driving. The C-Max is estimated to save almost $6000 in fuel costs over five years.

Drive it for 10 years, you save $11,700 - that's 41% of the purchase price.

The 2013 Chevy Volt starts at $39,000 but there's a $7500 Federal Tax Credit for this particular car.

This vehicle gets 98 miles per gallon when using electric power. Over ten years, that's $14,000 you won't spend on gas, bringing your total out-of-pocket cost down to $17,500.

I bought my car new for $18,000 nine years ago. It gets about 20 miles per gallon. The newer gas-powered vehicles get more than 30 miles per gallon, but here's the real bargain: 2013 models are selling for $5000 less than what I spent in 2004.

This year's gas-powered Ford Fiesta is priced in the low teens and gets up to 40 miles per gallon.

The Chevy Spark is one of the most affordable cars here. It costs $12,900 and gets 38 miles per gallon.

Vendors say if you treat the cars right, they'll have a high trade-in value. Dealerships have very little trouble selling a car that gets better fuel economy.
