A Henrico man is accused of having sex with a 12-year-old girl.
23-year-old Wayne Phillips faces charges of rape and sodomy, along with several others. Henrico police say they were alerted by the girl's father when he learned about the alleged crimes.
Richmond psychologist Dr. Alan Entin says, in similar cases, the accused doesn't always know they're doing wrong.
"I think it's a matter of power and control... It's called immature psychosexual development, and they think that's appropriate and it's very distorted and sick to see pedophiles like that," said Entin.
Police say the sexual encounters with the child and Wayne Phillips happened between September and December of 2012. Entin believes the victim will definitely need counseling.
"She is probably terrified, scared, angry, anxious, worried, depressed," said Entin.
Entin says young girls, like this 12-year-old, may develop a fear of men, of relationships and could even blame herself. He advises parents to pay attention:
"If you notice a change in your child's behavior, any of the symptoms of anxiety disorder or post traumatic stress, or depression, or drug abuse, or a change from how they were before from good students to poor students, you really have to look at that and talk to the child to see what's going on," said Entin.
Police say they are not looking for any other victims involved in this case.
