Richmond police say an officer sniffed out a major marijuana grow house hidden in plain sight.
The officer sniffed out 19 marijuana plants on the 1800 block of Dinwiddie Avenue in the Oak Grove community.
"I couldn't believe it. I was kind of taken back," remembers Sgt. Marvin Rush. "I was like, you could actually smell it."
Officer Kelly Morely was on a routine patrol when the odor slapped her in the face.
"It was a very strong odor," said Officer Morely. "I drove away and came back about five minutes later. I could still smell it."
Officer Morely decided to walk the neighborhood. She came to a home that contained what amounts to a street value of 42 pounds of marijuana. Police say the drugs could be sold for as much as $100,000.
"With that amount of marijuana you also face the possibility of someone getting robbed," said Sgt. Rush. "Violence becomes a factor."
41-year-old Kelvin Thomas and 38-year-old Roderick Edwards was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute.
"It was a pretty large grow operation," said Officer Kelly.
