Man charged with DUI after car crashes into Chesterfield home

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

Police charged 50-year-old Calvin Whitaker with DUI after they say he crashed his car into a Chesterfield family's home Saturday, leaving thousands of dollars in damage.

Officers say Whitaker crashed his Lexus into the home on the 2700 block of Amherst Ridge Loop off Jeff Davis Highway. Work crews have been securing the garage all day Sunday.

"We needed more time and materials," said repairman, Mike Walsh. "We were well unprepared to just coming in to repair a hole."

Walsh says this kind of work could take months.

Police say Calvin Whitaker crashed into the home just before 1 p.m. Saturday. They say there were at least six tenants inside and at least four were under 18.

"From what I understand, there were some kids playing a couple hours before this happened," said Walsh. "Luckily nobody was hurt or killed from the house falling down on top of them."

The crash did leave a huge hole near the roof, making it so unstable no one can live here until it's fixed. Crews are putting up support beams so they can pull down the brick veneer and start from scratch.

"Once all that's done, we're going to get this boarded up and closed in to make sure nobody gets inside here," Walsh said.

Remnants of the collision were still in the front yard Sunday. People say that the car came through a corner of the garage, knocking part of the home off its foundation.

The damaged Lexus was parked in a driveway across the street. NBC12 tried talking to the people inside, but no one came to the door when we knocked.

In the meantime, crews continue repairs, which could cost roughly $30,000. Police say the Red Cross is helping the family with living arrangements. The driver is scheduled to appear in court Monday morning.
