CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

A Chesterfield man faces capital murder charges in the death of a Virginia State Trooper Thursday.

28-year-old Russell Brown is charged with one count of capital murder of a police officer and a second count of attempted capital murder. Brown will face a judge at 9 a.m. Friday in Dinwiddie County for the murder of Master Trooper Junius Walker.

Walker was checking on a car parked on the shoulder of I-85 Thursday when the driver of that car shot him multiple times, according to State Police. Trooper Walker hadn't even put his car into park when he was shot, police said. Walker's patrol car lurched forward and into a ditch. The heat of the engine caught the brush on fire.  A driver passing by saw all of this, and called 911.

I-85 Southbound is back open after it was closed for nearly 13 hours.

Master Trooper Walker was 63 years old. He joined the Virginia State Police in 1973 and leaves behind a wife and two adult daughters.
