Police sergeant accused of covering up for robbery suspects

A police sergeant is suspended without pay, his police powers, revoked. Investigators say he tried to cover up for two people suspected of robbing a man in Chesterfield.

This is a case where two men met on the Internet and then decided to take things a step further by coming to a hotel on the 9800 block of Midlothian Turnpike. That's when investigators say things took a violent turn.

Police say three men - one in makeup - plotted to meet a fourth man.

"Once our victim arrived, he was approached by two men," said Lt. Randy Horowitz.

Officers say the suspects beat up the guy and robbed him. Derrick Aniello was arrested on the spot. The other two men, Ricko Morgan and Daniel Lumpkin took off.

"Detectives traveled to North Carolina during this investigation. We were able to identify Mr. Lumpkin and subsequently identify Mr. Morgan," Horowitz said.

But when local investigators couldn't find either, they called for U.S. Marshals - who later caught the duo hiding out in Ohio.

"They were staying with an acquaintance," Lt. Horowitz added.

That acquaintance, according to Horowitz, was a sergeant with the Cincinnati Police Department, Jeff Brunswick. The sergeant is now indicted for obstruction, illegally using a police database and helping two men avoid prosecution.

Officers say there's a lesson here for everyone.

"When you meet someone on the Internet, you really don't know who you're meeting…In this case, he thought he was meeting one person and he met three people," Horowitz said.

Aneillo is being held at the Riverside Jail without bond on robbery and conspiracy to commit a felony charges. Lumpkin and Morgan were extradited back to Central Virginia Tuesday. Morgan faces the same charges as Aneillo. Lumpkin is charged with conspiracy to commit a felony.

The Cincinnati officer could get his police powers back, pending the outcome of this investigation.
