Thousands of employees in central Virginia could be facing furloughs. Massive Sequester budget cuts are underway.
The Department of Defense took the biggest hit in these federal cuts, and since active members of the military are excluded, thousands of civilian military employees in central Virginia will take the hit.
Two key agencies in our area are bracing for furloughs.
At the Defense Supply Center in Richmond is the Defense Logistics Agency Aviation. There are more than 2,800 people that could be furloughed.
Over at Fort Lee in the tri-cities, some 5,540 workers could lose pay.
The furloughs will be once a week for the rest of the fiscal year - which ends in September. Notices will go out to the affected employees on March 21.
By law, they have to get 30 days notice - so the furloughs won't actually begin until April 21.
The furloughs amount to about a 20-percent cut in their pay.
