Roadwork on the Overbrook Road Bridge on I-95 will finish ahead of time, according to VDOT officials.
Back-ups for four miles stretched in both directions near the overpass over the weekend. The construction replaced nine sections of the southbound side of the bridge. VDOT spokesperson Dawn Eischen anticipates the work will finish three hours early, at 3 a.m. Monday morning, so commuters won't get hit in a snag.
"Folks going to work in the morning will be driving over a new bridge," said Eischen.
Crews are lifting out sections of the bridge, piece by piece, to be replaced.
In two weekends, the same type of replacement will begin on the north side of the bridge. Single-lane traffic detours will be the same as this weekend.
"It's a huge project for the region, replacing 11 deteriorating bridges," said Eischen. "These bridges are 50 plus years old. They are safe to drive on, but they really do need to be replaced."
The massive I-95 bridge replacement effort has already renewed five overpasses. The $109 million project is set to finish in the summer of 2014.
