You'd think these people were here to have a good time. Vendors had tables out, raffles prizes were laid out, a D-J was playing music, and there was even a comedy show.
So maybe it was a good time, but all these good folks, friends, family, and even the members of the Powhatan Hunting Club came together in a time of sadness trying to help raise money so that rusty can have a nice funeral and his family can pay off his medical bills.
David Cardwell of the Powhatan Hunting Club says that "Rusty was one of the nicest kids I've ever met." Rusty Mack's Aunt Melissa Herman says that Rusty was a "Fantastic kid, great kid, wonder kid, we miss him."
Kathy McCarty was rusty's next door neighbor. She put the benefit together and says the community has been very generous. "I just want to keep raising money to make sure this family is taken care of for this brutal crime. It's going to affect them for a long time; we want to make sure they're taken care of." said Kathy.
It's hard to see here in this setting, but there is still a lot of anger towards the four people authorities charged with the murder of Rusty. Ashley Mack, two other adults plus a Juvenile was charged with murder.
"It was a senseless act, a cowardly act, and I hope they get what they deserve." says David Cardwell.
We're told at least a couple hundred people showed up to the benefit Saturday. The funeral is scheduled for Tuesday, March 5th.
