STATE COLLEGE, Pa., March 1, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The number of jobs in higher education grew during the fourth quarter of 2012, but was outpaced by growth of all U.S. jobs. The number of advertisements for job openings in higher education also continued to grow, but at a moderating pace in the fourth quarter of 2012, according to a new report from HigherEdJobs, the leading source for jobs and career information in academia. An analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data by HigherEdJobs finds that the number of jobs at colleges and universities grew 0.7 percent during Q4 2012 compared to the same period a year ago, while the number of jobs in the overall U.S. economy increased 1.6 percent. This was the first time that overall U.S. job growth surpassed higher education job growth since Q1 2007.
Advertisements for both new and replacement job openings in higher education were up in Q4 2012, and, as seen in analyses of recent periods, at a decelerating growth rate. The number of higher education job postings grew 12.0 percent in Q4 2012, increased 16.1 percent growth in Q4 2011, and rose 40.1 percent in Q4 2010, which was about a year after the recession ended.
Colleges and universities continued to shift toward more part-time hires during Q4 2012, especially for faculty. Advertisements for full-time faculty were up 4.6 percent, compared to ads for part-time faculty, which rose 35.8 percent.
The report, which also includes annual recaps, analyzes job posting data from colleges and universities that have continuously subscribed to the company's unlimited posting plan for four years or longer, a group of more than 700 schools, as well as data from U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
HigherEdJobs is the leading source for jobs and career information in academia.
