Tifton's Denham plans to retire after Spring Hill Classic

TIFTON, GA (WALB) -

The NGA Tour is making its first stop at Tifton's Spring Hill Country Club this week.

It is the course former University of Georgia golfer David Denham played growing up in Tifton and likely will be the last tournament of his pro career.

Denham decided to retire from pro golf after failing to qualify for the PGA Tour this year.

He came out of retirement when he received an exemption for the NGA event.

David and his family recently moved to Athens where he says he is looking for a job.

He is also not giving up the game of golf.

Denham plans to return to amateur status and is looking forward to playing tournaments with his brother.

"Play some amateur golf.  Have some fun again. It has been difficult.  It is difficult traveling from small town to small town. Living in hotel rooms and your car.  Hitting balls, rain delays and cold mornings. It is alot tougher than most people think."

David Denham's goal is to play all four rounds this weekend at Spring Hill.

He opened with a 75 and is nine shots off the lead heading into Friday's second round after which the field will be cut.

Brian Maurer is the first round leader at the Spring Hill Classic.

He shot a 66 on Thursday.
