VCU fans camp out two days before game

Posted: Updated:

Are you ready for some basketball? VCU Rams are gearing up for a big game that has the whole campus crossing it's fingers. Thursday morning, students started lining up to claim their spot in line for a game that doesn't start until Saturday.

How long would you wait outside to see your favorite team? How about 48 hours? That's nothing for some rowdy Rams, who started camping out early, while ticket buyers took to the net - paying hundreds to get in the game.

"I'm just here camping out for the game," said Charles Dooley.

His was one of the first tents in line Thursday, two days before the Rams take on the Butler Bulldogs.

"The object is get better seats, floor seats," he said.

He wants better seats for the 34th straight sellout for a VCU basketball game. This one pits the Rams against a familiar team - the same one that beat the Rams in the 2011 Final Four.

"This is the opportunity for payback of the team that really ruined the dream that we had going," said Associate Athletic Director Robby Robinson.

Fans are paying to get there. Online, the $40 value tickets are going for hundreds of dollars.

Baja Bean Company is prepping for a full house, an overflow of sorts, of fans who want to witness the game on 14 big screens.

"We're opening up an hour early. We normally don't open up until 11. We're going to open up at 10," said manager Jeff Allums.

"They know they're going to get a good basketball game on Saturday," Robinson added.

The Siegel Center seats about 7700 people. A lot of fans are saying, with such a demand for the games, the school should give some thought to expanding the capacity. Robinson says there have been some unofficial talks about that, but no immediate plans as of now.

Non-student tickets for Saturday's big game sold out 10 minutes after they went on sale in October. Students' free tickets have already been claimed and VCU says anyone presenting a student ticket for admission has to show a valid student identification.
