12 Investigates: Sequester could mean furloughs for thousands of Richmonders

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - One of our areas largest employers could be hit hard if automatic budget cuts happen this Friday. Thousands of employees at the Defense Supply Center of Richmond (DSCR) are bracing for possible furloughs if congress doesn't act.

The DSCR won't comment, but after tracking down a lt. colonel in the Department of Defense, I can tell you - those automatic budget cuts would mean pay cuts for thousands of people here.

We took a tour of the facility just one year ago. The Defense Logistics Agency - Aviation, is headquartered at the DSCR. The agency supplies parts for aircraft - including major weapons systems.

The 600-acre site showcases choppers and F-14's. 3,400 from metro Richmond work here. Only about one percent of that work force is actually military.

If these cuts happen, 2,814 people will be furloughed once a week. That represents about a 20 percent cut in their pay.

The lt. colonel with the Department of Defense said it will impact the local economy in Richmond.

"Would you eat out, or go shopping, if you lost 20 percent of your pay?" said the lt. colonel.

The cuts go into affect on Friday if congress does not act. Furloughs for people at the DSCR would begin in April.
