HANOVER, VA (WWBT) -

A Mechanicsville mom accused of attacking her son with an axe is staying in jail. Kimberly Shepperson is also charged with arson because investigators believe she set her home on fire and endangered two other children.

Dressed in a jail jumpsuit, Shepperson didn't say much about what happened.

The call last Thursday came in as a fire from her home in the 8200 of Bultaco Trail. Investigators soon discovered it was something more.

They say Shepperson attacked her 11-year-old son with an axe, then set the fire in attempt to kill herself and two other children ages seven years old and 10 months.

"I'm sorry. I'm very sorry I hope they get through it," said Sandra Worsham who has lived next door for 15 years. Her son is friends with Shepperson.

"He told me this woman has a good heart," she said. "They've been saying all kinds of things about her on Facebook but he thinks she just snapped."

Court documents show Shepperson is divorced, but had primary custody of her children.

We've also learned the child Shepperson is accused of attacking had cancer. The family turned the property into a miniature zoo, using the funds to help pay for his treatments.

NBC12 even featured one of the events years ago - in our last story, the boy was in remission.

From one hardship to another, people who know the Sheppersons just hope the children are taken care of.

"I think they will they've got a good family and the father is a good father," said Worsham.

Shepperson's next court date is set for April 11.
