Henrico's Eric Cantor recently gave a major policy speech where he outlined his policy vision as House Majority Leader. He gave a passionate plea for a reform of the Medicare system and used this statistic to prove his point that reform is needed.
"Collectively states are spending more on Medicaid than they do on K-12 education," Cantor said.
Is Cantor correct? Is Medicare outpacing the cost of education in states like Virginia? According to the reporters at Politifact, that claim is true.
"For this past fiscal year states spend collectively, around the order of, somewhere like, 400-billion dollars on Medicaid and that's about 24% of their total budget," said Politifact Reporter Sean Gorman.
