VCU's Rowdy Rams up for best student section award

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

When it comes to college basketball fanaticism, VCU students are hard to beat.

The Rowdy Rams keep the student section at VCU home games rocking and now the fan base has vaulted them into the college elite, as far as school spirit is concerned.

VCU is one of 16 schools in the finals for the Naismith Student Section of the Year Award.

Indiana Hoosiers
Iowa State Cyclones
Kansas Jayhawks
Marquette Golden Eagles

St. Bonaventure Bonnies
Saint Joseph's Hawks
Southern University Jaguars
Syracuse Orange
Utah State Aggies
Valparaiso Crusaders

VCU has to finish in the top eight to make the next round. Advancing is all based on fan votes.

Fans can visit www.facebook.com/ILoveCollegeHoops to cast their vote. The deadline is Friday at 11:59 p.m. The eight institutions with the highest vote tally will be deemed finalists and placed in front of the Naismith Board of Selectors for the final selection.

A total of 158 schools representing 25 conferences submitted entries for the award. The winner will be announced on March 8 and will receive $10,000 to be used in its general scholarship fund.
