14-year-old charged for bringing BB gun to Petersburg school

PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) -

A 7th grade Petersburg student faces charges of possession of a weapon on school property for bringing an unloaded BB gun to school, according to police.

The 14-year-old brought the gun to Peabody Middle School around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, police said. School personnel notified the School Resource Officer and within minutes a Sergeant arrived to the building and took the youth in custody.

Area schools have taken a zero-tolerance approach to weapons on campus. Under Virginia code, a BB gun is not considered a firearm, but is a weapon. Bring one to school, you could face expulsion.

Petersburg mom Carolyn Stewart has two cousins who attend Peabody. She says charging the student with a felony is a start but doesn't go far enough. Stewart says, police should charge the parents also.

The student appeared before juvenile intake and was released to his parent. No other students appear to be involved.

Petersburg Schools are still looking into the incident.
