Shockoe Bottom association issues ultimatum after club shooting

Shockoe Bottom leaders say they are fed up after reports of a shot being fired inside The Canal Club.

The president of the neighborhood association wants club managers to put an end to the popular Sunday event or get out. We tracked down the club's manager, and we were there when police met with the community.

Neighborhood association president David Napier says Richmond Police announced they do have a suspect in custody.

Only our cameras were rolling as Richmond Police met with the Shockoe Bottom Neighborhood Association one day after locals frantically took to Facebook exclaiming "man somebody just shot a gun up in The Canal Club...I'm done."

"Is it a safe place to come?" we asked club manager Kathy Jacobs.

"It's a very safe place to come," replied Jacobs after reports of a single gunshot being fired inside The Canal Club Sunday night. "It was a mistake. We are going to make corrections so that it will never happen again. It was a mistake on our part for whoever let him in the door."

The live music on Sundays at the club is starting to hit a sour note with the neighborhood association. Napier is now issuing an ultimatum and threatening legal action.

"We are tired of it. They know better," said Napier. "They had an agreement to not do these kinds of things on Sunday nights."

Napier says he says he has contacted the ABC Board and he has a message for club owners.

"Just cut it out or move on," said Napier. "We're sick of it. Find another use for the building."

But managers insists they are making changes.

"We are going to make sure that the doors are all covered. I've got four different doors that people can come in," said Jacobs.

"Was that the problem?" we asked.

"It could have been," replied Jacobs. "We don't know."

Club managers say they had at least 5 off duty police officers on hand during the event. Jacobs says they had at least a dozen additional security personnel on hand. they say

"We are just happy no one got hurt," said Jacobs.
