A night at a Richmond club turned frightening after someone fired a gun shot into the air.
Sunday nights get pretty packed at the Canal Club. It was around 2 a.m. Monday that things got out of hand - business owners nearby say they don't want to see this happen again.
Erik Seidenberg has been a server at Bottom's Up Pizza for several years. He lives nearby and has no qualms about the area, even after hearing about the violence early Monday.
"You do get a lot of people down here," said Seidenberg. "You don't want people to get a bad impression of the neighborhood. It's safe to be around here. There are cops and security at the door - but there's always going to be one bad apple."
Police confirm no one was shot, but one person was taken into custody, according to the Times-Dispatch.
The Canal Club website says it has a show every Sunday. The most recent - a DJ party - hosted by a local radio station. Also, according to the site, the club says it "reserves the right to search all persons, backpacks, purses or bags." The shot was fired inside, says the Times-Dispatch - no word on how the gun got through security.
"It's a concern, and people blow it out of proportion," Seidenberg added. "You look at something like that - it's terrible. You don't want to hear about stuff like that happening. Generally, its' pretty safe and the cops have been great. We have such a heavy presence. They're attentive to our needs coming in and making sure everything is okay."
The on-call media representative for Richmond Police has not returned our repeated phone calls. Neither has the Canal Club nor the radio station that hosted the event.
