Search continues for third suspect in deadly Prince Edward Co. home Invasion

Posted: Updated:

The search continues for the third suspect in a deadly home invasion in Prince Edward County. Prince Edward County Sheriff Wesley Reed says a father was home with his two-year-old son around 4:30 a.m. Sunday morning, when three armed men kicked in the front door.

Wesley says gunfire was exchanged, after the homeowner reached for his own gun. Two of the intruders were shot and killed. The third suspect fled on foot. Reed says the situation points to the father protecting himself and his son, who weren't harmed.

"From the way it looks, he (the homeowner) was defending himself," said Reed.

A manhunt ensued around the home off Prince Edward Highway, involving local and state police, the K-9 unit and a helicopter.

Investigators say that the suspect fled on foot about a quarter of a mile west of the home. The search dogs tracked his scent that far. The man is then believed to have gotten in some sort of vehicle, and taken off on Route 460. There is no description yet of the car that he may have taken.

"We're just telling people in Prince Edward County to be aware of their surroundings, and take all the extra precautions we can, until we can catch this suspect," said Reed.

Melissa and Gary Long, who live a few houses down from the crime scene, say a police helicopter landed in front of their lawn.

"It was just flying around this area here, around the three houses actually," said Melissa, who said the chopper landed on the median across the road.

Investigators are now asking the public for any information that may lead them to the suspect at large. The Prince Edward County Sheriff's Office can be reached at 434-392-8101.
