Police pass out fliers to catch killer of convenience store owner

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Richmond Police are working hard right now to dig up new leads following the brutal murder of a southside convenience store owner. Friday, they passed out hundreds of fliers to people who live nearby.

Two months ago, Mohammad Taib was shot inside the Food Mart on Erich road. NBC12 was the only station walking alongside detectives today. Investigators say they're determined to keep this case from going cold.

For the second day in a row, police were out canvassing the area passing out fliers like this one. This comes just days after Taib's family offered a $10,000 reward for anyone who can lead to the arrest and conviction of the killer. For detective James Baynes, catching the killer is everything.

"I think all cases are hot until we get them solved," said Baynes.

Police passed out more than 300 fliers in the Aden Park Apartments – just a stone's throw from the Food Mart where the 59-year-old was killed.

"We've gotten a few leads we're following up on," said Detective Baynes. "We don't want to share them or scare anyone off but we are on it."

The handout has information on the November 24 murder - along with Taib's picture and the reward offered to anyone who can help catch his killer.

Detective Baynes urges anyone who knows about the murder to come forward - and he hopes the fliers will push that message.

NBC12 spoke to Mohammad Taib's widow inside the store Friday. She didn't want to speak on camera - but she did say she appreciates the police department's tireless effort to get to the bottom of this case.

If you can help police, call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000. Tips can remain anonymous. You can also call Detective James Baynes directly at: 646-3617.
