Prince George school budget cuts 12 teachers

PRINCE GEORGE, VA (WWBT) -

A dozen teachers in Prince George County could lose their jobs with the school district, after the schools' superintendent released his budget for the coming year.

Superintendent Dr. Bobby Browder proposes cutting 19 positions, including 12 teachers, five assistants, one administrator and one clerk. Dr. Browder told school board members $1.6 million in cuts are needed, along with $1.1 million in additional funding from Prince George County.

Board Chairman Robert Cox has invested nearly two decades with the school district. A proud father whose daughter just graduated from Old Dominion, Cox said in an interview Friday her foundation for success was an education in Prince George. Now, Cox is fighting to keep the same foundation strong for the future.

"A lot of friendships were built as my daughter went to school here," Cox said. "And I feel for every employee we have. I want to see no employees lose their jobs."

Dr. Browder proposes which positions to cut, then sends the plan goes to the School Board. Cox said the Board will try to refine and reduce the number of cuts, keeping the pain as far as possible from the classroom.

"We could look at the elimination or realignment of some programs instead," Cox said.

Governor Bob McDonnell promised to fund part of a two percent raise for teachers, but the money must be matched by local taxpayers. Districts are struggling to come up with that money, but Cox said Prince George should be able to come up with the money.

"We're going to find the money. I think we will find the money to do that."

The District plans to pass a final budget by the end of February. The difficult financial situation is attributed to a reduction in federal funding as well as increases in healthcare and retirement costs. Fewer families at Fort Lee resulting because of sequestration could also harm the District's finances.
