Henrico Schools pass GPA requirement for student athletes

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

To play the game, Henrico student athletes must have the grades. The Henrico School Board passed a GPA requirement Thursday afternoon in a 4-1 vote.

If Henrico students don't have at least a 2.0 GPA, they can't participate in high school sports.

According to school administrators, 11-percent of the student athletes in the county don't have a 2.0 GPA right now - that's about 1,600 high school students.

While some think the move is a great way to push academics, others think that without sports those kids will fall through the cracks.

Lisa Jones says balance is essential in her household. Team sports comes second for her daughter, Jasmine, who carries a 3.7 GPA.

The Henrico mom thinks the 2.0 requirement is a start but believes that standard is too low.

"I think it should be a 2.5," said Jones. "When they're getting ready to go to college, it requires you to have a 2.5 to get in."

Franklin Harris is the Highland Springs Girl's Basketball coach. If it were up to him, there wouldn't be a GPA requirement.

He worries about all East End Boy's Football and Basketball teams, which he believes will take a hit.

"I think it's going to put more kids in the street than they realize," said Harris. "For some of these kids, athletics is the only way they come to school and gives them a goal to get out of school."

Harris says without sports, kids will fall through the cracks and the school system won't get them back.

The GPA requirement will go into effect September First of 2014. It will be the pilot year, which means no penalties.
