A Henrico man has been charged with allowing his 7-year-old relative access to a gun. The child then used the loaded gun to threaten several students on his school bus, police said.
Harvey L. Pleasant, 78, was charged Tuesday with allowing access to a firearm by children, which is a class 3 misdemeanor. The charges stem from an incident on February 4, when a 2nd grade student headed to Ratcliffe Elementary School pulled out a loaded gun and threatened several classmates, according to Henrico Police.
"He was threatening the kids and he pointed it at his own cousin," one classmate who witnessed the incident said. "He was threatening that he was going to kill him."
The child who was threatened and his brother reported the incident to a teacher once they arrived at the school. Police pulled the student from his classroom and found the gun in the student's backpack.
Police now say the 7-year-old took the gun from his home and the gun belonged to a family member who resides with him. Neighbors say the boy lives with his grandfather.
The classmate said the 7-year-old was often picked on. The student was suspended.
