RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

VCU police are now searching for three men who shot paintballs at a student in the middle of the night.

Three orange paint splotches were visible on a facade Tuesday morning, where a female student was hit while walking home alone on the 800 block of West Grace Street shortly before 12:15 a.m. Tuesday.

According to a VCU crime alert email, three men in a dark SUV pulled up to the student and began firing. The young woman was hit, and ran to the West Grace Housing Apartments to call police.

"This is different, unexpected but, it's also kind of scary," said VCU student Brandon Adams. "Getting hit by a paintball could feel like you got shot by something else at first."

It is not clear if the victim was targeted, or if the assault was a random act.

"I'm grateful that it wasn't something else, more lethal," said VCU student Katherine Caverone. "You know we have enough going on in the world, without having to worry about paintball."

The SUV left the area last heading east on West Grace Street. The victim described the suspects as three white males.
