Matoaca enjoying championship season

Posted: Updated:
CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

Before this season, Matoaca's last district championship was celebrated in 2002, when the Warriors competed at the AA level in the Southside District.  2013 has seen the team make history, winning its first Central District regular season title, which also marks its first at the AAA level, and now the Warriors are looking for postseason success.

Matoaca got the Central District tournament off to a successful start on Monday night, racing past Colonial Heights, 68-43.  The Warriors will face Hopewell in Thursday's semifinals, as the Blue Devils knocked off Meadowbrook.

Warriors head coach Charles Payton starts two sophomores who saw significant playing time last year as freshmen, and that experience is going a long way this season.  Matoaca posted an 11-4 district record, including three wins over district powerhouse Petersburg.

Matoaca's regular season title gives them an automatic bid into the Central Region tournament.
