Best Friends Fur Ever, a state-of-the-art doggie daycare and overnight resort located in Joppa and Cockeysville, MD, is pleased to announce that it will host its annual Bless the Best Irish Fest, a charity event to benefit Maryland K-9 state troopers, Saturday, March 9, 2013. The event will be held from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm at Best Friends Fur Ever's Joppa location, 1009 Philadelphia Road, Joppa, Maryland.
For a small fee of $5, attendees will be able to participate in games, win prizes and watch a variety of demonstrations including exciting K-9 drug, bomb and search and rescue drills.
Kelly Cullum, owner of Best Friends Fur Ever, said that the fundraiser’s idea generated when a state trooper stopped in the facility one day and discussed the funding needed to maintain the safety of their K-9 partners.
“[The trooper] explained that it was so important for each dog to have a bullet proof vest, but they cost around $300 each,” Cullum said. “The state does not pay for them."
Without support, the purchase of safety items for Maryland's K-9 partners can cost troopers a pretty penny, she added. However, the purchase of safety items doesn’t compare to the cost of K-9 partners.
“Two years ago, one of the troopers came out in the morning to let his partner out of the kennel, [but] the dog had passed away suddenly at 6 years old,” Cullum said. “A newly trained dog purchase price is between $5,000 and $7,000, and the state has a fixed budget considerably less than that price.”
“As we began to plan the event, we decided that beside [the] demonstration[s], we should add in some other fun and meaningful items,” Cullum said. “So in that first year we added a minister to bless all the dogs that attended.”
A photographer also comes out to take pictures of the dogs and kids, while incorporating an Irish-themed background.
“Those photos are then for sale as a magnet or keychain for $6,” Cullum said. “[The photographer] donates $4 back to the troopers.”
“We also have a face painter and balloon animals this year,” Cullum said. “We always have free munchies, soda, beer, wine and dog treats to give it the traditional Irish party touch.”
Cullum said that the anticipation of this year’s charity event is even greater.
“We hope to have more people than last year and raise over lots of money for the State Troopers and their K-9 partners,” Cullum said.
Adults, kids and furry-faced friends are all encouraged to participate in this year’s charitable event. Individuals interested in attending should RSVP by Friday, March 8, 2013 by calling 410-671-7529.
