Four escaped inmates found in woman's home

PRINCE GEORGE, VA (WWBT) -

Four inmates were found in a Prince George woman's home Sunday morning after they had escaped from Crater Juvenile Detention Center Saturday night.

"One was found in my attic, he had gone up into the attic to hide," said homeowner Charlotte Donahue. "The other was found in one of my closets and the last two were found in my bedroom."

Donahue was out of town when the inmates were found. She says, around 7:30 a.m. Sunday, officers called her to come home quickly.

Prince George police said 17-year-old Alvin Rogers, 15-year-old Yusef Collier, 17-year-old Shelvy Edwards and 15-year-old Raekwon Brown didn't resist arrest.

"They weren't armed," said Prince George Police Captain Brian Kei. "They looked like they were tired and very cold."

Temperatures dropped below freezing overnight. Police say, the four teens trekked a mile in the woods and swamp. At one point, they tried to flag down a car and the driver then called police.

Officers canvassed the area and found Charlotte Donahue's front door window broken, ending the exhaustive search that stretched for ten hours.

Police say, the teens escaped after a riot broke out at the detention center. Two guards were overpowered and suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Officers are investigating if the teens broke a window or used the guards' keys to get out.

For Donahue, this is the second time Crater inmates have escaped to her home. Almost ten years ago, she says two inmates hid in her shed but were later caught in Hopewell.

Donahue is just glad this time she wasn't home. "How in the world would I have dealt with four men who were trying to get away from the law?"

Each inmate has been charged with felony escape and police are investigating to see if any more charges will be brought forth.

The inmates could face assault charges, breaking and entering and possibly grand larceny.
