One arrest nabs serial burglars in Richmond

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Some Richmond residents are sleeping a lot easier after police say they have taken down two serial burglars.

Richmond Police say the crooks have been terrorizing the Hillside Court neighborhood near Commerce Road since last July.

Officer Lemont Carey chased down the serial home intruder.

"I did not hesitate," said Officer Carey. "My instincts said I needed to check it out and see who they are."

It all started at Lone and Bruce Street in Richmond. Officer Carey spotted the suspects leaving a Hillside Court residence.

"Once I pulled up both individuals saw me, and they bolted," said Officer Carey. "Then the foot pursuit was on."

Police recovered a smart phone, a camera and a laptop. They would ultimately solve 9 cases dating back to July 2012.

"One arrest broke several cases wide open and we were able to clear a couple of them," said Detective David Cuffley.

Detective Cuffley picked up the case and was later able to snag a confession.

"It makes it a whole lot easier because there is less crime in Hillside Court right now," said Cuffley.

The foot chase ended well for an officer striking out on foot in a neighborhood that's seen it's share of crime.

"Hopefully when they come home they can feel safe and secure in their own residence," said Officer Carey.

Police say most of the stolen items were sold. They did return the items they recovered on the scene. Officer Carey was named Richmond Officer of the Month for the month of January.
