Firefighters in Chesterfield County will soon see some well overdue new gear.
The firefighters were just awarded a near one million dollar grant through the Department of Homeland Security. Chesterfield County will have to pay roughly 20 percent of the cost of the matching grant. The money will be used to replace many old and worn firefighting outfits with the best new gear.
Experts recommend replacing the gear every 5 to 6 years. Some of the current gear in use is more than 10 years old.
"This keeps them alive," said Chief Mark Nugent. "This keeps them from getting hurt. This keeps them from getting burned, it's a life saving grant award. That's the beauty of this."
Firefighters went out on more than 36,000 calls last year- each time wearing this gear. The grant is a competitive one, applied for by the firefighters.
They are being fitted for the gear now and hope to get it all by the end of the year.
