He won't go so far as to call himself a hero, but the Coast Guard says he is.
NBC12 was on the scene moments after a jet crashed at the Mayfair Mews Apartments in Virginia Beach on Good Friday.
Most people would run from a scene like this, but Petty Officer Nicholas Beane ran towards it.
He was honored Tuesday with the "Meritorious Service Medal" for cutting the pilot free from his parachute.
"He was coming in and out," said Beane. "Wasn't really sure where he was and I actually did tell him. I said, 'Lieutenant, my name's Nick. I'm from the Coast Guard. I'm here to get you out of here,' because it was the only thing I could think of to say, and he kind of snapped to and said he was never going to hear the end of it."
Beane's wife says the couple daughter, who wasn't even born when all this happened, calls her dad a "super hero in training."
Beane says anyone of his fellow "Coasties" would've done the same as he - perhaps even quicker.
