Teachers and state workers could get a 3% pay raise

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

A bigger than expected pay bump could be on the way for teachers and state workers.

The first raise in six years for Virginia government employees is still being fought over in the Senate. The issue isn't the pay raise for teachers or state workers. Instead, Medicaid is turning into a major road block that could torpedo the pay hike plan.

The good news here is that both House and Senate committees voted for a pay raise. That has raised the chances for more money to come down the pike. Public school teachers, college faculty, and all state employees will be getting a 3 percent pay raise on average. The 3 percent raise for teachers is somewhat of a surprise after Governor Bob McDonnell originally proposed a 2 percent raise right before Christmas, but there will be drama this week that could put the Senate's pay raise plan in peril.

No democrats voted for the budget proposed by the Senate on Sunday, due to concerns that there will be no money to expand Medicaid in Virginia.

Governor McDonnell says that they can't spend more on Medicaid before it's reformed. Democrats say baby boomers are getting older and that money would go to the expansion of health care jobs.

We will found out on Tuesday if the passes or not.
