Employee uses company's Twitter to inform about mass firing

Posted: Updated:

A disgruntled employee, who was being fired, used the company's Twitter account to live-tweet the firing of 190 staff members reports Forbes.

Poppy Rose Cleere, 21, was in control of @hmvtweets and decided to tweet from a room where the Human Resources department of HMV, a British entertainment retailer, was informing 60 employees of the layoffs.

Cleere took control over the Twitter and Facebook accounts for the company when she was an intern, two years ago.

The first tweet on the firm's account read: "We're tweeting live from H.R. where we're all being fired! Exciting!!!"

Another post read: "There are over 60 of us being fired at once! Mass execution, of loyal employees who love the brand. #hmvXFactorFiring"

One of the most entertaining tweets that came through before HMV took back the account and deleted the offending tweets: "Just overheard our marketing director (he's staying, folks) ask ‘How do I shut down Twitter?'"

Since then, HMV has taking control of all social media accounts and deleted the tweets that were posted by Cleere.

Tweeting from her own account (@poppy_powers), Poppy said: "I would apologize for the #hmvXFactorFiring tweets but I felt like someone had to speak.

"As someone without a family to support/no mortgage I felt that I was the safest person to do so."

Over a series of posts, London-based Poppy explained that she had not ‘hijacked' HMV's account and also mentioned her tireless push to educate the company about how to utilize the tool of social media.

She added: "I hoped that today's actions would finally show them the true power and importance of Social Media, and I hope they're finally listening."
