Virginia Union earns CIAA win over Chowan

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Virginia Union University's Wesley Simmons scored 16 points as the Panthers defeated Chowan University 75-67 on a night when former Panther greats returned to Barco-Stevens Hall on Saturday.

VUU's Calvin Brown scored 15 points and Cordero Holt added 12 points in the win.  Virginia Union's Kimar Johnson also scored 10 points. Holt also pulled down a team-high six rebounds.

The win came on a night when six former VUU players had their numbers honored in the rafters of Barco-Stevens Hall.  Former women's player Paris McWhirter, along with former men's players Brad Byerson, Jonathan Walker, William Davis, Troy Phillips and Greg Williams had their numbers honored.

Also on hand were members of the 1985 Virginia Union University team, including former NBA star Charles Oakley.  The 1985 team won 31 straight games and was ranked #1 for the entire  season.

Chowan was led in scoring by Quinton McDuffie's 20 points.

The win raised VUU's record to 6-12 overall and 4-7 in the CIAA.  The Panthers are currently tied for third place in the Northern Division of the CIAA.

Chowan fell to 5-14 overall and 0-11 in CIAA play.

The Panthers are back in action when they host Virginia State at the Siegel Center.  Last month, Virginia State snapped a 23-game losing streak to its arch rival.
