The subject of mental illness has been front and center on the national and local scene over the past few weeks. The fact of the matter is that mental illness and mental wellness is one of the most important social issues of our time, but it has been a controversial issue for many years.
It is estimated that in a given year up to 54 million Americans are dealing with a mental or emotional disorder as a result of daily stress, life in general or family genetics.
Mental illness means different things to different people, but for those of you who know someone who suffers from some form of mental illness your understanding and empathy may be more acute than others. Unfortunately, there is sometimes a stigma attached to mental illness, and there shouldn't be. It is simply an emotional or mental disorder.
If you think you or someone you know may have a mental disorder or emotional problem there is help and hope. There are many reasons why someone may suffer with mental illness, but the most important thing is to get them the help and guidance that is needed.
Many times it starts with just being honest that everything may NOT be alright.
It's also important that we support government and private agencies and let them know that mental wellness is not any issue for some of us, but an issue for all of us.
