Henrico schools to become tobacco-free

Posted: Updated:
HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

Henrico schools are going tobacco free - not just on school grounds, but at all school-related events.

The new policy isn't just for teachers, students, and staff, but will include parents, contractors, and guests - basically anyone who comes on school property at anytime.

Henrico High School is already smoke-free, but now the rules will spread throughout the county.

School officials say a smoke-free environment will decrease the rate of student smoking, and parents seem to agree.

"I think it's a good idea, I support it, because, living in the 21st century, a go green community, you want your kids to stay healthy at all times," said Carolyn Bracey.

"I think that's a wonderful idea, because people should not smoke on properties at schools especially with children around," said Frederick Jones.

The tobacco free policy goes into affect August 1 and for staff and teachers who want to quit, Henrico Schools will offer programs to help.
