CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

Police say a Chesterfield babysitter shook a baby so severely, the baby had to go to the hospital. Ashley Pigg faces a number of charges for the crime, but is now out on $10,000 bond.

The 2-month-old baby is still in the hospital, trying to recover from multiple brain bleeds and an eye hemorrhage.

On Pigg's Facebook page, you'll find a self-proclaimed God-loving woman with a baby, new husband, and childcare background.

Police and attorneys confirm that Pigg was a regular caregiver for the victim, that she cared for him at her home on Hartford Lane.

The incident allegedly happened on Monday. Police say the child's parents were the ones who decided to take him to the hospital.

"The child was acting different and began to vomit so they contacted the hospital and took him in," Lt. Randy Horowitz, Chesterfield Police.

Police say when they started the investigation, Pigg told them she fell with the baby. But, a doctor's diagnosis said the baby's injuries were consistent with shaking, including a brain bleed.

Police say Pigg later confessed to taking the fussy baby out of the swing and shaking it.

In court, judge James D. Rigler released Pigg on bond, saying, "If you did what they say you did, you took a completely defenseless child and may have injured it in a way that they can never recover."

As a condition of her bond, Pigg is not allowed near any child under 12, including her own baby, without supervision. She's also prohibited from caring for any child before her court date in May.

We did check into Pigg's background. She does not have a criminal history, and police say there is no indication this has happened before. We're also told she wrote a note of remorse.

The victim is expected to recover, though any long term damage won't be clear for some time.
