VDOT prepared to treat icy roads from freezing rain

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Freezing rain in the forecast means slick streets and potentially dangerous driving.

VDOT reports that road temperatures Monday morning are ranging from 32 to 35 degrees.

Some icy patches have been developing throughout the morning causing some traffic to move a bit slower on highways like I-95.

VDOT says that preparations are already underway for the freezing rain. Once the rain starts to fall, VDOT and contractor crews said they'll spread sand and salt to moist pavement as needed, focusing on areas that typically freeze first such as bridges, overpasses and ramps.

Drivers coming into the city from the north and west advised to reduce their speeds, even when roads have been treated. Those areas north and west of Richmond will be at a higher risk of black ice.
