Plows continue snow clean-up on side roads

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

The snow clean-up continued Saturday, as side roads took priority for plows. Major highways were just about clear Saturday morning, after an intense night of work. VDOT aims to have every road passable within 48 hours after a storm. VDOT crews will continue to work 12 hour shifts, until every road is plowed. Meantime, Virginia State Police responded to more than 650 accidents across the Commonwealth.

"Yesterday, there were quite a few accidents, especially during the afternoon rush hour," said VDOT spokeswoman Dawn Eischen. Eischen says crews dispatched a thousand pieces of equipment, just in the Richmond area.

"Relatively everybody was doing the speed limit, except for one car…. About two minutes later, I passed that car (crashed into) the medium strip," said Steve Gill, of his evening ride during the storm.

Plows swept over 14,000 lane miles of side roads Saturday, which weren't reached overnight.

"You can imagine how difficult it would be just within the first 24 hours to get to all of those (side roads)," commented Eischen.

Veteran VDOT worker, Joshua Booe, says residents are becoming more aware, when plow trucks need to pass.

"A lot of neighborhoods I've noticed this year, are pulling the cars into the driveways. I guess they've learned from us (plow truck operators) going by," said Booe.

Even though side roads are mostly clear, officials are warning of black ice freezing up from melted snow during the day. A slow-go is still certainly the safest route.
