HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

Tragedy strikes the Richmond-based Metropolitan Junior Baseball League. A teenage player collapsed and died during a major tournament in Miami over the weekend.

The parents of David Deans V are issuing an emotional plea for answers. They hope their story will help save other lives.

"I'm angry," said Kimberly Hall-Deans. "I'm just angry because I feel like I didn't get a chance to say goodbye."

The Deans family wants answers after their son David Deans V collapsed on the field at the 5th Annual All Star game in Miami, Florida over the weekend.

"Then I got the worst call of my life," recalls David's father David C. Deans IV. "Saying that my son...my first born...was gone."

David had just turned 17 the week before. Doctors say he died of a massive heart attack.

"I just want to know what happened," said David.

We sat down with the league director William Forrester, Jr. Forrester also happens to be David's Godfather. He is now reviewing safety protocol.

"We'll look to see what we could put in place," said Forrester. "We've been in existence for 46 years and nothing like this has ever happened before."

Forrester says as soon as the ambulance arrived they started CPR, but Forrester says there was no ambulance on the field.

"Safety is always first," said Forrester. "But we do work with a limited budget. Anything I could have done I certainly would have done it."

The family now hopes their story will help save other lives.

"I want to make sure that there is always somebody that is CPR certified on the scene," said Kimberly. "That they are always prepared for the worst."

The family says David had no history of heart problems. The funeral is this Saturday at St. Paul's Baptist Church. Team members will serve as pall bearers. They plan to wear David's number 42 on their sleeve.
