Richmond Police investigating attempted abduction of two girls

CHURCH HILL, VA (WWBT) -

Police are investigating an abduction attempt in Church Hill.

According to a police report, a man tried to take two girls in the 2800 block of P Street, luckily they were able to get away.

When the call came in for an attempted abduction near the Fourth Baptist Church, youth ministry leader Cynthia King was inside, meeting with the praise dancers. Five children were in her care. She says all members of the group were with her the whole time. Still, he can't believe it happened so close to the church.

"I thank God that my kids are here and safe," says King.

According to a police report, two girls told officers a man they did not know tried to take them.  But they were able to get away.

"I check the parking lots not specifically to watch cars but our job is to watch everything," say William Murrey Jr., the church's security officer.

Murrey said his shift started at 6p.m., ten minutes after the girls say the incident happened.  Murrey says he didn't see anything suspicious.

"If it happened, it had to have happened before I got here because we are paid to protect people in this area," he said.

Both adults say they will be more vigilant when it comes to watching out for neighborhood children.

"The people that are contributing to all of these …atrocities I just pray for them that God would just get in their heart and change their mind and just turn them away from their wicked ways," says King.

King says she's open to talking about what happened and making it a lesson in being more careful  even in your own neighborhood.

Officers say a description of the person they're looking for is not available right now. Richmond Police say this is an ongoing investigation and are still questioning witnesses.

Police say if you know anything they encourage you to call Crime Stoppers. Tips can be anonymous that number is 780-1000.
