An off-track betting parlor could move in next door to a pre-school in the West End Henrico, but the school's owner says he doesn't want drinking and gambling anywhere near kids.
200 kids come to learn and play at the Primrose School in Henrico. A block away from it is where the off-track betting parlor would go if the county approves the plan. One of the school's owners says betting has no place there. Supporters say this is an over-reaction.
So with off-track betting, people can gamble on horse races happening at Colonial Downs. The races are shown on satellite TV during school hours.
Steve Richter, one of the owners at Primrose School, says he doesn't want to take a chance with possible vandalism, trespassing, or drunk driving. Supporters say the horse-betting clientele isn't rowdy, and similar spots haven't had problems with their neighbors.
The betting parlor would go into Big Al's Sports Bar, already in operation across the street.
Both sides will face off Thursday night at 7:00 before county supervisors at the Henrico Government Center.
