MLK Milestone for Richmond’s largest food bank

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

In the midst of bread baking and lettuce chopping in a chrome and pastel-colored state-of-the-art kitchen, workers at Richmond's FeedMore Food Bank took a moment to look at dozens of unfamiliar faces.

The machines would normally fall silent on a MLK holiday. But because of a record number of volunteers answering the call for the national Day of Service, the kitchen is open for the first time on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

"When you see these people coming giving up their time and service, it has to warm the heart," said FeedMore CEO Doug Pick in an interview Monday. "Martin Luther King often asked, ‘What are you doing for others?' And I think that is answered beautifully here."

The call to service brought 20 parents from Richmond's Steward School to FeedMore Monday, wearing gloves and hair nets to prepare food for the Food Bank's Meals on Wheels program.

"Steward has school today, they consider this a day of service, not a day off," said sixth grade parent Delaney Mescall. "We learned by example from our kids, and we decided to put together our own day of service, right here."

FeedMore programs provide 75,000 meals a day to people in 31 counties and five cities in Central Virginia. The organization has 92 delivery routes for Meals on Wheels, and will be served with food prepared by the Steward parents.
