The best time to score a summer job may be right now. Thousands of seasonal jobs in Virginia are getting posted over the winter.
If you're looking for a playful atmosphere to accompany your paycheck, Busch Gardens and Kings Dominion are hiring summer help. Busch Gardens is holding its job fair Saturday morning at 10 a.m. through 2 p.m.. The company needs to hire 500 employees to work March through October. John Harris, of Busch Gardens, says least a thousand people turned out for the event last year.
"Come early, probably around 9 o'clock, so that you have the opportunity to survey the jobs we have," suggested Harris."
Kings Dominion needs 4,000 employees for its high energy season, especially since it's added new rides.
However, if you're looking for something a bit more low key, staffing expert Deseria Creighton-Barney, of Exclusive Staffing, says Richmond is ripe with other opportunities during the summer.
"I've noticed that the trend has been that business does tend to pick up in the summer…The financial industry is usually pretty heavy….general help, customer service, data entry, on up to executive level positions," said Creighton-Barney.
The Goodwill Community Employment Center stresses getting applications in early.
"Use some job search boards that are specific to part time jobs, summerjobs.com. We also like snag a job," said Nancy Brady, of the Goodwill Community Employment Center in Mechanicsville.
Brady also suggests checking out stores or facilities that might see more traffic during the summer like Lowes, which has a garden center, or even a local YMCA.
"You need to start job hunting now because you'll have more choices," added Brady.
