Cold weather shelter available overnight for snow

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

The city of Richmond says be prepared for power outages and stock up on supplies for Thursday evening's storm.

The city has also opened a cold weather shelter for anyone who needs help riding out the nasty weather.

People can go to the 6th Mount Zion Baptist Church on West Duval Street if they don't have heat in their homes, and want a place to stay overnight. Before anyone comes here though, they have to sign up, and here's how:

Anyone who needs a warm place as the storm moves through can go to Commonwealth Catholic Charities downtown at 1400 Oliver Hill Way, next to Richmond Juvenile Court. People should show up before 5 p.m., and the people there will help you out.

The city also recommends that you have a supply kit like this one packed up in your car for the commute home. Having a full tank of gas and a fully charged cell phone is also advised.

For people who have generators, officials are saying if power goes out, not to connect them directly to your homes wiring. That could cause a back feed to the power lines connecting to your home, and that could be deadly.
