VDOT already preparing for messy road conditions

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Snow in the forecast usually means its time to start salting and sanding the roads, and that's what VDOT crews are expected to do Thursday morning.

They will be working 12-hour shifts all in preparation for the winter storm that will move into our area Thursday night. That's why they are telling people now to be extremely careful ahead of this winter storm.

According to VDOT, there are over 250 roads throughout the state that are now closed, and that's just due to flooding. Many of these roads are considered secondary roads, but if when you add snow and ice on top of that, things can really get messy.

State troopers have already responded to more than 150 accidents in the Richmond metro area since the rain started falling Monday.

So be careful out there, and starting Thursday night, do not travel unless absolutely necessary.

Also, Richmond's Department of Public Works is also ready to spring into action once the rain makes its transition to snow.
