Development changes possible on Midlothian Turnpike

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

The public has a chance to speak out about plans for a new development on Midlothian Turnpike.  Up for discussion at a Tuesday Planning Commission meeting is the land across from Walmart, originally zoned for office and commercial space. Now, the developer wants more room for businesses.

One of the biggest concerns for people living near the development is concern that a change of plans would mean a big box store like a supermarket, with lots of parking spots, would be positioned right next to the berm.

"The citizens have addressed some concern about traffic, noise, light, landscaping and any potential negative impact it might have on their residential development," said Robert Clay with the Planning Department.

Clay has been in discussion with the developer about the project. The department is recommending the zoning change, but Clay says not without some restrictions that would protect nearby residents too, like a 100 foot space between the development and the homes.

"They've agreed to a berm and some landscaping," said Clay. "They've agreed to address lighting issues, hours of operation, and things of that nature."

Tuesday night, officials will hear from the public in a public hearing. Any changes would require approval from both the planning commission and the board of supervisors.
