A family from south Richmond is demanding answers after a deadly officer-involved shooting.

Police say 45-year-old, Frankie Pitt, was shot following a struggle over the officer's gun just before 3 a.m. Sunday.

The incident happened on a ramp to Chippenham Parkway off Hull Street Road. Police say an officer approached Pitt's car.

"When they got out of the car, they saw Frankie there messing with the gas tank," said Azzie Robinson, Pitt's fiance of twenty-one years.

About ten minutes earlier, employees at a nearby Circle K off Hull Street Road say the cash register's drawer was stolen. Police say Pitt quickly became a suspect.

"One of the cops said he saw the cash register in the back of the car," said Robinson, of her conversation with investigators at 8:30 a.m. in the morning.

Investigators say they tried to take Pitt into custody, but he resisted. They say a struggle followed, with Pitt trying to get hold of the officer's gun. Then, an officer fired off a shot.

Robinson says the man she's known for twenty-one years was an unlikely target.

"Frankie is not a violent person. If trouble came his way, he'd walk the other way," she said.

Robinson could hardly hold back the tears and outrage over her fiance's death.

"I am very bitter right about now, because they took a good man out of this world," she said.

Robinson says Pitt held a job at a trucking company and had previously done utility work for the city. She says they lived together in a home off Cottrell Road for more than two decades, which she says Pitt decorated for the holidays.

"I'm not feeling anything right now. I'm numb. I'm shocked," said Robinson.

Pitt's mother, Mittie Bass, rushed from North Carolina after hearing of her son's death. "I feel bad and I want to know what happened because something's wrong," said Bass.

It's a speculation shared by Pitt's loved-ones, until, they say, they understand more clearly what led to this shooting.

Police are not releasing many details since the incident is still being investigated.

The officer involved in the shooting has been temporarily assigned to a non-enforcement position.
